Title: Fuel for Fire<br />
Author: Julie Ann Walker<br />
Publication Date: July 2017<br />
Category: Romance<br />
Format: Mass Market Paperback<br />
ISBN: 978-1-4926-0878-3<br />
<br />
<br />
Fuel For Fire is a must read! The story starts off with a bang and is covet to cover of nonstop action with a surprise around each corner. <br />
<br />
Dagan and Chelsea's story is not an easy romance. Their love is hard fought while trying to stay ahead of the danger around them. I loved this story. It is filled with the snark and sass that we have come to expect in the Black Knights series. The action is gripping as the BK team fights to complete their mission and keep Chelsea safe. I was by turns laughing, then wondering how they were going to stay ahead of the dark forces working against them.<br />
<br />
In the middle of it all, a haunting secret from the past is revealed that could destroy any chance of Dagan and Chelsea getting their happy ever after.<br />
<br />
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved it and look forward to future titles in the series.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370369815023572304noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789187523719466984.post-71440797631998649732016-10-03T21:16:00.002-07:002016-10-03T21:17:34.526-07:00Book Review: Sparking the Fire, by Kate Meader Sparking the Fire is the newest title in Kate Meader's Hot in Chicago series. We get to enjoy the further adventures in romance of the Dempsey firefighters - foster siblings turned firefighters. <br />
<br />
Reading this story, I anticipated the same style of story that I found in the previous titles. I was happy to read more about each of the previous couples in this book as well. <br />
<br />
Wyatt Fox and Molly Cade are a couple with a secret past history. Each have moved on from the past and found their happiness in their careers. Wyatt is a firefighter at Engine 6 station, along with his foster siblings in Chicago. Molly is an actress from LA. <br />
<br />
Molly comes to Chicago to film a movie about a female firefighter. The movie has a story line that is loosely based upon the experiences of Wyatt's foster sister, Alex. Molly would love to get Alex's stamp of approval on the movie, but Wyatt is not wanting Alex to be involved. Wyatt, still recovering from an injury, is asked by the department to be the technical consultant for Molly. Wyatt wants nothing to do with the job at first. Unable to get out of that duty, he decides to do his best to get through it with minimal damage to his family.<br />
<br />
Molly is a woman on a mission. Having gone through a horrible experience that threatens to ruin her career, she is placing the future of her career on making this movie. She is not only acting in the lead role, but is the producer of the movie as well. Meeting Wyatt on the set of the movie is a shock to Molly. As she works with Wyatt, they realize that the old feelings are still there. Both are reluctant to get into a relationship. They have each been burned badly by others in their pasts and will have to come to peace with their pasts before they have a chance at being with each other.<br />
<br />
This story has lots of surprises. At times, there are so many things going on at once that I felt like I needed a chart to keep it all straight. It all works out though in the end. As with the other titles in the series, there is an HEA.<br />

The male protagonist goes through a transformation that showcases his vulnerability, insecurities, possessiveness and protectiveness. <span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">Kate Meader was raised on romance. An Irish girl, she started with Catherine Cookson and Jilly Cooper novels, and spiced it up with some Mills & Boon. Now based in Chicago, she writes romances of her own, where sexy contemporary alpha heroes and strong heroines match each other quip for quip. When not immersed in tales of brooding mill owners, oversexed equestrians, and men who can rock an apron or a fire hose, Kate lives on the web at <span style="color: #1f497d;"><a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&q=http://www.katemeader.com/&source=gmail&ust=1475638740006000&usg=AFQjCNHY1lGtlRN3xwYx-lmwXQUKYX5edA" href="http://www.katemeader.com/" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">katemeader.com</a></span>.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Princess and the Beast is the newest
title from Chance Carter's Bad Boys series. This book is about
Deacon, a man who grew up on the rough side of Boston. He had a
horrific childhood, including being raised in an abusive home. Life
was never easy for Deacon (aka Beast) and he learned quickly that he
would have to fight to survive. Deacon is fighter and good at it.
In this story, he works as a bouncer at a club in Miami.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Savannah was raised in Boston, but
unlike Deacon, she was raised in a wealth home. All isn't as it
seemed though. While she had never known hunger or having to do
without the necessities of life, she was raised in a home lacking
love. The behavior of her father made her wary of wealth. She had
watched, firsthand, how her own mother slipped away and die after
being in a hopeless, loveless marriage.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
On the surface, Deacon and Savannah are
light years apart. He is a large man sporting tattoos and an
appearance that would make the most sensible of men cause to use
extreme caution. Savannah is a gentle, shy woman who is still trying
to make her own life away from the influence of her father. Yet,
when you look closer at them, they are both struggling with their
pasts. They each have gone through a form of abuse as a child that
has helped to shape them into the person they each have become.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Deacon works at a night club as a
bouncer. When he sees Savannah arrive with her friend/room mate,
Olivia, Deacon ushers the girls in. He is taken with Savannah,
though sees her as a bit of a shy mouse. Savannah surprises both
Deacon and herself when she finds the boldness to flirt with Deacon.
Their relationship is super-nova hot and they have a wild 24 hours
together before all hell breaks loose. Trouble comes when a man at
the club, who has sadistic tastes when it comes to how he treats
women, takes notice of Savannah and wants to take her as his own.
Now, Deacon must fight to save Savannah and her friend, Olivia, from
being the next victims of this man's cruelty.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I loved the story as well as the pace
that it was told. I never felt that it was taking too long in one
area or another. The story was very well written and held my
attention from the first page. I hated having to set it down and
couldn't wait to pick it back up again when my work was finished.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Intermittently through the story, we
also are treated with a side story involving Grady. Grady is a
member of the Brotherhood, whom we were introduced to in Chance
Carter's earlier titles of this series. The Brotherhood are a group
of men who have formed a “family” that is intensely loyal to each
other and will use whatever means are necessary to right the wrongs
that come at their family. Each of the Brothers are total bad ass.
Yet, for how scary they may be to others, they are extremely
protective and loving to their women.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Grady get involved with a woman at a
bar who is trouble on legs. He makes a mistake getting involved with
her, but later, he tries to do all he can to help her overcome her
demons. His story is very touching and I cried as I read how his
story ends. I hope that there will be another book in the future
with Grady getting his “happy ever after.”</div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Sometimes,
it is nice to see a glimpse of the person behind the stories that we
enjoy. All books have a note about the authors, but being the
curious person that I am, I like to see beyond that introduction. It
is amazing to get to know more about these creative souls that bring
so much enjoyment and enrichment into our lives through their books.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">In some
ways, it was hard to decide who to start this feature of my blog
with. There are so many wonderful authors out there who have written
books that I thoroughly enjoy reading. I honestly didn't know who I
would choose to write about first. Yet, in the midst of my
thoughts, one name continually came to the forefront......Maya
Banks.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">My
introduction to Maya's books was Colter's Woman, the first story in
the Colter series. I had read books before that involved menage'
relationships, but this one has always stood out for me. Yes, the
story did contain the sex scenes, but they were secondary in my
opinion. Like all of Maya's books, the relationships are always the
central focus. She doesn't write sex scenes that are not a meaningful
part of a relationship. Of all of her books that I have read, I have
never rolled my eyes and thought, “Oh look. Those horny rabbits
are at it again.” IN her books, the sex and intimacy is written in a way that just flows naturally in the relationship of the couple. The story made me feel like I knew the family.
You just wanted to read more and I sought out the other books in the
series. Even after Maya ended the series, though I totally
understand her reasons, I will always long for another one to be
written. I found that Maya endeared herself to me more <i>because</i>
of her reasons to end the Colter series. She addressed the reason on
her Facebook page. The main Colter family members from the original
story, Adam, Ethan, Ryan, and Holly, that had endeared themselves to
readers were getting older. Maya didn't want to have to write a
story down the road that involved the death of any of them due to age
or other reasons. In honesty, I wouldn't have wanted to read a story
involving one of them dying and the rest dealing with the aftermath
of grief. I loved that she ended it in a celebration of
grandchildren and the joy and promises of the future for the entire
Colter family. Throughout all the trials and tribulations the family
went through in the series, the core remained that family is
everything! A family, pulling together and joining forces, can
overcome anything that life throws their way.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">As the
Colter series was ending, I found Maya's KGI series. Again, the
series is based around a family that support each other. Like Holly
Colter, Marlene Kelly, is a mother who is strong and very nurturing.
She also shares the traits of gathering “chicks”, young adults
who are in need of the love and support of a family, which are
“adopted” into the family fold. Once Momma Kelly decides someone
is one of her chicks, they are forever considered a member of the
family. The KGI series is based upon the Kelly sons, who have formed
their own Black Ops type organization. They take on jobs that others
cannot do as well as side jobs for the government that the government
doesn't want to deal with themselves. Many of the jobs involving
the rescue of kidnap victims or hostage situations that span the
globe. There is a definite military theme, but at the heart of the
stories is a family that is so tightly connected that you just wish
you were one of the many “chicks” that Momma Kelly includes.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Maya has
written countless series and books over the years. She has stories
for nearly any romance genre that you could name. She is truly
gifted in her ability to create characters that engage you. You fall
in love with the family members, even as you want to knock sense into
some of the alpha males for the things that they say or do. Her
female characters are strong, even in their fragility. While the
women have a gentle side, when necessary they can be just as much of
a badass as their men. The men are strong in their belief that they
should be the protectors and providers of their women. They treat
their women with honor and respect. They are proud of the careers
and accomplishments of the women. They also take pride in the
strength of the women. I have never found a simpering weak woman in
Maya's stories. Even in stories where the woman is in a dangerous
situation, she is never portrayed as being unable to help save
herself. Each couple goes through a rough patch that would break
many. They come out of it stronger than ever. Through series, such
as the Colter's and the KGI books, Maya shows us what a family should
be. They have their ups and downs, but when it comes down to it,
family is everything. They support one another. They defend each
other. No matter what storm life throws at them, the family weathers
it together and comes out strong due to their tight family bonds. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Maya is
active on social media. Her posts gives such a glimpse into her
personality that I find refreshing. I've learned that she has
issues with laptops. I've laughed as she tells of an experience with
junebugs. I have cheered for her family as she talks of the
accomplishments of her kids. I have witnessed first hand the
generous spirit that she has and the total humility she expresses
towards her readers and fans. Maya is the real deal. I see Maya as
a real life Momma Kelly. She has the sweet spirit to nurture those
close to her and the steel backbone to defend them when necessary.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">If I
were to write a bucket list of people that I would feel absolutely
humbled to meet one day, Maya would be at the top of the list. As a budding writer, I have to say that Maya is one of three authors that I admire over all others. She writes a quality of story that I can only hope to someday reach. She, along with Julie Ann Walker and Christine Feehan, set a high bar for me to work towards.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Thank
you Maya for all the great stories that you share with us all.
Through them, you teach us all what family is all about. Looking
forward to many more titles to come in the future.</span></div>

They packed more into their short time together than most will experience in a lifetime.  The love for each other and their family shines brightly through the book.  Steve had a deep love for Terri and the kids that could only be matched by his love for  wildlife.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I was deeply touched by her words about how animal cruelty broke Steve"a heart.  He literally felt it soul deep.  The passion for conservation that he shared on camera was real.  It wasn't hype for a camera.  He was truly driven to bring his message home to those who watched the documentaries and the shows filmed for Animal Planet.  </p>
<p dir="ltr">Steve was compassionate and took his role as a Wildlife Warrior seriously.  He was driven to have an impact on making the world a better place.  He knew that the way to touch the heart's of others was to present the wildlife in a way that made it personal.  He often said that if you can give others the experience to know more about the so-called unlovable animals, such as his beloved crocodiles, the people would start caring about the animal's plight.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In the final chapters, I read about his heartbreak over the death of his Mom, Lyn Irwin, and the change it made in him.  Through the pain of his grief, he found a deepened determination to do more to bring the conservation message to the forefront.  Terri shared the story of how she learned of his untimely death and how she had to tell their kids.  Her inner strength in the midst of her very world being turned upside down was humbling to read in those pages.  Steve had always been her rock and now she would have to step into that role for their children.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Throughout the book, I laughed and I cried.  As she described those painful days days following Steve's death, I felt the grief again that I had experienced when I first heard the news.  </p>
<p dir="ltr">Seeing Terri, Bindi, and Robert today, you see a strong, living family unit that would have made Steve proud.  As they continue the work Steve had started, along with Terri, his legacy lives strong.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Terri has my utmost respect for what she has accomplished as a single Mom.  Though she openly admits that she still grieves for her beloved husband, she has not allowed the grief to overshadow her life.  The love and devotion of her and the kids towards each other and for furthering the conservation message is a testament not only to Terri's strength but Steve's legacy.</p>

<a href="http://tinyurl.com/zqzc2h6" target="_blank">Devil and the Deep</a> is the newest installment in Julie Ann Walker's Deep Six series. It is currently on pre-order status for it's July 5, 2016, release date.<br />
<br />
On Ms. Walker's <a href="http://julieannwalker.com/hot-as-hell/" target="_blank">website</a>, she offers the following description for Devil and the Deep.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6); box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Roboto Condensed', sans-serif; line-height: 28.8px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">

<span style="font-size: x-small; line-height: 28.8px;">Maddy Powers’s life revolves around cocktail parties, political fundraisers, and charity events – but she can’t forget the daring former SEAL who appropriated her father’s yacht a few months ago … or the scorching kiss they shared before he disappeared into the deep blue sea.</span></div>
<h3 style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6); box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Roboto Slab', serif; font-weight: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: center;">

<strong style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">SPARKS A FLAMING DESIRE…</span></strong></div>
<div style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6); box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Roboto Condensed', sans-serif; line-height: 28.8px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Bran Pallidino carries a dark secret behind his lady-killer eyes – one that keeps him from pursuing a serious relationship with Maddy. But when she’s taken hostage during a trip to the Dry Tortugas, the men of Deep Six Salvage drop their treasure hunt for a sunken galleon and embark on a dangerous mission to save Maddy.</span></div>
<h3 style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6); box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Roboto Slab', serif; font-weight: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: center;">
</h3>
<div style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6); box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Roboto Condensed', sans-serif; line-height: 28.8px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
<strong style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">WITH EARTH-SHATTERING REPERCUSSIONS.</span></strong></div>
<div style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6); box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Roboto Condensed', sans-serif; line-height: 28.8px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">As they fight her merciless kidnappers, they discover this isn’t a simple hostage situation, but something far more sinister. Passion boils between Bran and Maddy, but what good is putting their hearts on the line if they don’t survive the dawn?</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This book delivers. It is action packed and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story is engaging and it was hard to put it down, once I started reading. I loved the way the story gripped me from page one. Unlike many books out there, Ms. Walker wrote the heroine to be a strong, independent woman who knows how to take charge when necessary. Even in the face of danger, she is no shrinking violet dependent on her man to come rescue her. She faces her fears head on and with the fortitude that could rival that of the SEAL team. I loved this strength. It is a very welcome departure from the dainty, weak, women that often are portrayed in books of this genre. Though Maddy has been dealt a raw deal in her life, she doesn't fall apart and become helpless. </div>
<br />
Bran is a warrior through and through. He is as rock steady as they come when in the heat of battle. He has crack in his armour though - Maddy Powers. While he wants her, the secrets of his past press on him. His character is another fine example of why I love books by Julie Ann Walker. Her heroes are very strong and able to fight the battles they face without blinking an eye. Yet, she gives up glimpses of the man behind the warrior. We see their inner struggles presented in a way that doesn't take away from their strength. In fact, their very weakness is a huge part of why they are so strong.<br />
<br />
If you are looking to add to your summer reading list, this book is a must-have. Though a part of a series, Ms. Walker writes her books in a way that they can be stand-alone. You never feel lost if you read the books out of order. <br />
<br />

It is funny where you learn about
new-to-you authors. Recently, I had a sponsored ad on Facebook show
up on my timeline for an author named, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Chance-Carter/e/B01671UVI6/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2?qid=1461872252&sr=8-2-fkmr0" target="_blank">Chance Carter</a>. My first
thought was, “A man writing romance?” Okay, I was curious. I
love reading romance novels with a HEA style ending. Going to
Chance's page, I read that he writes Bad Boy stories that are stand
alone and always have the HEA ending. I looked at the covers and saw
pictures of ripped guys with tattoos. Definitely, they looked like
the bad boys the story description promised.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The next thought that intrigued me was
the idea of reading a romance story that was written from a man's
perspective. Let's face it, men have a completely different way of
seeing relationships. I knew that reading these books would be a
fresh point of view. I wasn't disappointed. I absolutely loved the
books.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I will say here though, if you are not
one who can handle a more rough and raw dialog, then be warned. The
bad boys in these stories are more liberal with dropping the F-bomb
that any military operation. Likewise, there is a deeper rawness to
the sex scenes. They play out like a man's fantasy. It isn't the
most graphic that I have read, compared to some erotica stories that
I have read in the past, but it is much more graphic than a sweet
romance book.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The story lines in the books are solid.
Don't let the self-published status of the books fool you. Chance
Carter writes like a seasoned published author and his books deliver.
The four books he has available are each a stand alone. They are
also a part of a series. I love the way one book seamlessly flows
into the series, yet you could read them out of order without feeling
lost.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Once I started reading the books, I
ended up reading all four books in just two days. They are quite
literally books that were hard to put down.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The reading order of the Bad Boys
series:</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<br />

They come out in batches. It is exciting when several authors release a book about the same time. It also can bring up a case of "which do I read first?" <br />
<br />
I haven't been reading Christine Feehan's Dark series recently and she has another one coming out soon. I love to re-read a couple of the books in a series that lead up to the new one being released. It gives me a continuity, reminding me of where the series is going. When you read the number of books that I do, this is very helpful for me to keep a series fresh in my mind so that things mesh together more easily.<br />
<br />
I am currently re-reading Dark Storm. It is funny that no matter how many times I have read the book, I find new things that I didn't catch the first time. I am also re-reading the Black Knight series by Julie Ann Walker, in preparation of her newest book that she is finishing right now.<br />
<br />
I think this story by Julie Ann is one of my most awaited for. The main character is one that I have enjoyed in the earlier books of the series. I have been looking forward to his story being told.<br />
<br />
What books are you reading? What is in your "to be read" stack? My Kindle died on me and I still haven't been able to repair it. So, back to the low-tech methods. I purchased a book that I have been waiting for. Hopefully, you will enjoy it as well.<br />

Cayenne was another captive held in the same building as the Fontenot girls. Cayenne is set to be terminated. Much feared by those who created her, she is powerful and a danger to all. She has learned to not trust in anyone. Trap helps her to escape and she repays the favor by helping in the protecting of the girls.<br />

<br />
<div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Melting Point is a short e-novella in the
Hot in Chicago series by Kate Meader. This story is one that I was
surprised to find myself looking forward to. I don't generally read
a lot of books dealing with same sex relationships, but this one got
my attention.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Gage Simpson is one of the Dempsey
foster kids. These kids grew up together in the home of Sean &
Mary Dempsey and found a family. The foster Dad was a firefighter
and all of the children followed in his footsteps. Together, the
kids work at the same firehouse.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
We first met Gage in the first book of
the series, Flirting with Fire. He is the most happy-go-lucky guy I
have ever met in a book. He was also a bit of a man-whore. With a
great physique and an over abundance of charm, he has no trouble
finding another guy to hook up with. That is, until he meets Brady
Smith.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Brady Smith is a chef and owner of the
Smith & Jones restaurant. He is a brooding, former Marine, with
a complete dislike of being touched. When Gage is taken back to the
kitchen to meet Brady, the sparks flew instantly.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Brady is a wounded soul. Having been
captured and tortured while serving in the Middle East as a Marine,
he has scars both inside and out. He avoids people as a much as he
can. What he didn't count on was the persistence that Gage has as he
pursues Brady.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Their relationship isn't easy. Each
has past issues that they are dealing with. The biggest obstacle
however is the effects that Brady's time as a captive has on his
perceptions of self worth. Gage is patient and understanding of what
Brady is dealing with up until an event challenges that steadfast
support.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There is a lot of sex involved in the
story. For the amount of it though, it didn't seem too over the top.
I found that overall their story was one that felt so natural.
Unlike some stories that make same sex relationships look like two
people in constant heat, this story really had a strong emphasis on
the relationship over the physical side of things.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was
good to see these two have a happy ending.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-family: Lucida Sans Unicode, sans-serif;">In
some ways, I am conflicted as I write this review. Did I enjoy the
book? Yes. I can honestly say that I did. This is also where the
conflicted feelings come in. Almost immediately, actually within the
first chapter, there was something familiar in the story. Soon, I
realized what was bothering me. The basics of the story is extremely
similar to the Dark Prince book written by Christine Feehan. The
more I read The Last True Vampire, the more similarities I was
finding. Let me explain in the following breakdown.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Lucida Sans Unicode, sans-serif;"><b>The

<span style="font-family: Lucida Sans Unicode, sans-serif;"><i>The
vampires in this story are born but are considered “dhampir”
until they are transformed by a true vampire. At the time of
transformation, the vampire loses their soul. They must find their
mate, who carries their soul, to have their soul restored to them. </i></span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Lucida Sans Unicode, sans-serif;">Vampire
leader/king is named Mikhail</span></div>

<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Lucida Sans Unicode, sans-serif;">As
I read the story, The Last True Vampire, I simply could not separate
it from Christine Feehan's book. Though the specifics or details of
the story were different, the theme and flow of the book was eerily
familiar. So much so that when I talked about The Last True Vampire
to my husband, he thought I was talking about Ms. Feehan's book.
Which leads to my conflicted feelings. Did I like this book on it's
own merits? Or did I like it because it resonated so strongly with
the Dark (Carpathian) series which I have been a fan of since its beginning?
I honestly cannot say. What I do know is that I truly wish that the
book was more original in it's content. It would make reviewing a
lot easier. Bottom line is that the book is good, but I wish it had
something that set it apart from another author's work. </span>

<b>My Thoughts</b>:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I absolutely loved this book. Though the stories are short, they each are complete and do not leave you hanging. The writing is engaging and in each and every story, I felt drawn to the characters.</div>
<div>
The stories each featured a warrior as a main character. Each one had challenges to deal with that were the results of their experiences in military service overseas. Each is a reluctant hero. Humble in their service and willing to sacrifice all for their battle buddies.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I loved that the book included a female hero in one story. She both broke my heart and had me cheering. It was wonderful to see a story where the character who served and sacrificed in the military was a woman. With so many women serving in the armed forces today, it was a welcome change to see a woman take the hero role.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One thing that I have always loved about anthologies is that I read stories written by some favorite authors while also being introduced to new to me authors. Actually, that is one of the joys of reviewing books. I am able to share what I read and often will stretch my own comfort zone. There are times when an anthology is a hit and miss. Some stories connect with me while others fail to hold my interest. Not so with Way of the Warrior! Each story was a pleasure to read.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
An added incentive for me was the fact that all proceeds from the sales for this book will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. This organization has done great things to help our veterans to transition after serving in combat and being wounded. The help these warriors receive is a critical part of their recovery as well as improving their quality of life.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Though I already have this book on my Kindle, I plan to purchase the paperback as well to support both the authors and the Wounded Warrior Project. I applaud the authors for their generosity of sharing their talent to benefit such a worthy cause. It says much about the character of each of the authors that they are willing to give up their income from the book sales to benefit our warriors who sacrificed so much for us all. Buying the book is just one other way that we can all honor them and give back. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I highly recommend this book both for its stories and for the fund raising that it is doing for the Wounded Warrior Project. </div>

<br />
It has been a crazy week here. We live in a rural area and as you may know from my blog title, we live off of the grid, which means not using any electricity from a power company. With spring finally here, we are scrambling to get homestead tasks going in between rain storms.<br />
<br />
I am reading as much as possible to keep up with the demand and will have many more book reviews coming soon. Currently, I have about 9 books on the shelf ready to be read & reviewed. I am choosing to do them in order of which one is going to be published first.<br />
<br />
I have started a Facebook page to help connect readers with this blog as well as announcements of upcoming books and events that I read about on author websites. If you would like to check out my page on Facebook, you can find it at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/off.grid.mommas.bookshelf" target="_blank">Off-Grid-Momma's Bookshelf</a>. <br />

<b>Book Summary:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: open-sans, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
When newly divorced Kate Adams is approached on the sunny deck of a California hotel by hockey star David Burke, and he invites her to dinner, she almost says no. He’s obviously younger than her. And charming. And drop dead gorgeous. But there’s also something sweet about David, so Kate—who hasn’t done anything spontaneous in a very long time—accepts his invitation.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: open-sans, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It is, after all, her fortieth birthday.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: open-sans, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
However, a real romance with thirty-year-old David, whose picture is in the gossip pages as often as it’s in the sports pages, is out of the question. No matter how much she wants him, it’s just too risky.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: open-sans, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But meeting Kate has been David’s lightning strike. She’s the one for him, and he has no intention of giving up on her.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: open-sans, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
So while Kate guards her fragile heart, David sets out to win her over with the same determination that drives him on the ice.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: open-sans, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
And he’ll break every rule in the book if he has to.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: open-sans, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>My Thoughts:</b></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
This story was pure entertainment to read. I felt for Kate as she struggled with a divorce after 20 years of marriage. It wasn't an easy divorce and she definitely has some baggage to work through. She meets David while on a conference trip and the chemistry between them is quick to ignite. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Without giving too much of the story away, I wanted to mention a few things that stood out. First, the story has several things going on at the same time. Kate's ex is an abusive jerk that thrives on tormenting her. Kate's teenage daughter, Laura, plays heavily in that situation. Second, Laura has her own personal issues to work through when she has her first significant crush. Third, we have David, who has a reputation of being a player with women, having to face the consequences of his past behavior, and lastly, Kate has to face her insecurities caused by her past marriage & divorce as well as the age difference between her and David.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I absolutely got a snarky pleasure from some of the interactions between Kate and her ex. My heart broke for her at first, but as she gained her inner strength, I cheered her on. I loved the protective side of David and his devotion towards Kate when a tragedy happened. His supportive and true caring towards Laura was also heart-melting. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
This was a great read and I literally could not put it down. The story gripped my attention and I loved every moment of it. I am hoping that there will be future stories about some of the other characters in the book. Especially one somewhere down the road with Laura and her first love. The way they are written, it would be easy for that story to be revisited later on. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-top: 12px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">This book was hard to put down. I love stories where the couple don't get along at first and have to work their way into a relationship. For me, it just seems more believable if the story isn't all puppies and posies from the beginning. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">Luke Almeida is a walking, talking, in your face alpha-male. Short tempered, he uses his fists more often than diplomacy in tough situations. A bar room fight gets Luke in major trouble with the city mayor. His job threatened, as well as the possibility that his foster siblings will be split up into other engine companies, Luke has to get with the program and follow the suggestions of Kinsey Taylor, a PR worker from the city offices. Not an easy task since Kinsey has a way with pushing Luke's limits.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">Kinsey Taylor at first comes off as an "I am woman, hear me roar" personality but we soon learn that she has her reasons. Her take-charge attitude goes against the grain with Luke and sparks fly immediately. The verbal sparring between these two keeps you entertained. Typically, I will connect with one character over the other in the sparring situations. In this book however, I found myself changing sides quite often.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;"><br /></span></div>

Because of past relationships, each of them has trust issues and must work through them. Eventually, they do and then the real sparks start flying.</span></span></div>

That doesn't happen often for me. It is a rare thing for me to enjoy a book so much that I start loading up my Kindle with more of that author's work. Ms. Meader's writing does it for me. The character development is spot on and she doesn't fill in gaps in a storyline with sex just to get her daily word count. The intimacy between Luke and Kinsey is something that seems to come in a natural timing for the story and isn't awkward. </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This title is book #3 in the Love Under the Big Sky series. I haven't read the first two titles, so was thrilled that this book is a stand alone. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The story is about Jillian Sullivan has returned to Cunningham Falls, Montana, after a bad divorce. She is dealing with a personal humiliation stemming from her ex-husband's cheating during the marriage, along with other issues from the marriage.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Jillian faces another heartbreak in Cunningham Falls. Her best friend is related to a man whom Jillian had a one night stand with, Zack King. Zack, an Army veteran, is a divorced, single Dad with a preteen age son, Seth. Zack and Seth are working through some issues of their own past when we meet them in the story. Seeing Zack again has brought to the surface feelings which she has tried to keep hidden ever since their night together. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The chemistry between Jillian and Zack leaps off the pages from the word go. The interplay and verbal sparring in the beginning has you alternately cheering for them and wanting to knock their heads together. I loved watching the progression as they face their own history and deal with the miscommunications that lead to their parting after their one night stand.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once they are able to sort through their feelings and deal with their past, you see them helping each other to face their own private demons. I loved how they also brought Seth into the picture by making him such an integral part of their relationship. They made sure that Seth was okay about their relationship before letting it go too far.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I loved the "real" factor of this book. I was able to connect to the characters and looked forward to reading more. It was a hard book to put down, in spite of daily tasks that I needed to be doing. After reading this, I sought out the previous two titles in the series. As always, it is a complete joy to find a new series to read. Especially when the series hits you right in the "feels" and makes a connection with you.</div>

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Viper-Game-Ghostwalker-Christine-Feehan/dp/0515155543/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426991920&sr=8-1&keywords=viper+game+christine+feehan" target="_blank">Viper Game, by Christine Feehan</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Viper Game is book #11 in Ms Feehan's Ghostwalker series. It takes place in the Louisiana bayou and introduces us to a new team lead by Wyatt Fontenot. We first learned of Wyatt when he was a supporting character in book #3, Night Game, which is the story of Wyatt's brother, Raoul "Gator" Fontenot.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In this story, Wyatt has come back home to the bayou at the request of his beloved Grandmere, Nonny. There are strange happenings taking place in their bayou and Wyatt has come to help. Upon his return, Wyatt learns that a new manufacturing business, with shady dealings, has set up next to Nonny's medicinal herb field. When she was gathering herbs, the guards assault her. Wyatt is enraged that anyone would torment his 80 year old Grandmere. So, along with a few members of his team, he goes out to investigate and teach some manners to the guards.......Cajun style.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Early in the book, we learn of a new ghostwalker character, Pepper is a young woman who was taken and adopted by Dr Whitney when she was a toddler. She was taken to France and along with others there, she was used for experimentation. The ending results is that she is as lethal as any ghostwalker but lacks the desire to be a soldier. She is sent to the bayou, along with a set of triplet baby girls who share her animalistic enhancements. When she refuses the demands of her handler, the order is placed that the babies will be terminated.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This story is one of discoveries and was a pleasure to read. My heart broke for Pepper's plight as she had to deal with the painful aspects of the enhancements that Whitney forced upon her physiology. The emotional torment she also went through over her inability to rescue all three babies was a palatable one that you could feel through the telling of the story. Most heartbreaking was the complete lack of knowledge that she had in how to live in the world outside of the lab. As Wyatt helps her through these challenges, he faces many of his own. The enhancements that he went through from Whitney have brought upon him an emotional state that is raw in that he has to tame the animal side of his nature. Already a hot-headed Cajun, Wyatt now faces the territorial and possessive nature of his cat physiology. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
One of the major climaxes of the story is the attempt to rescue the babies still in the lab facility. They are out numbered but these ghostwalkers have a deep conviction that the babies will not remain in the lab to be treated as lab rats in the schemes of a man who has lost all sense of humanity.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
By the end of the story, we have learned new things about the elusive Dr Whitney. There are other revelations as well that were a surprise that I enjoyed learning about. In the end, we are introduced to another female who is now on her own. She is a ghostwalker as well and will certainly have her own story in an upcoming book. I cannot wait to read more about her.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As always, Ms Feehan has scored high on my list of favorite authors. I am always amazed at how she can have long running series that never lose their attraction. With Viper Game, she has come through again in a big way. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
This book was a very difficult read for me. I got the book without any description or summary to give me a clue what it was about. That was my first mistake. Never, ever, EVER, again will I read for review a book without a description. Had I been given any indication what the book was about, I would never have read it for review.<br />
<br />
This story is dark from page one. It begins with a funeral and a wounded soul. The main character, David, is a man who has been hiding within the Amish community for 20 years, Known as Caine to the Amish, he is able to avoid the outside world's horrors. Caine/David was severely traumatized as a young man and is dealing with the emotional aftermath. With the death of his mentor in the first pages of the book, Caine's world is turned upside down.<br />
<br />
He returns to the world outside the Amish community to face the demons of his past. It is a horrid place that he must travel through to eventually find peace. A major portion of the book is about the grizzly murders that are taking place in the small town. Someone who knows of Caine's past is systematically killing everyone involved in his trauma. No one is safe from this retribution.<br />
<br />
As I read this book, there were parts that just made me want to puke. The graphic nature of one murder scene in particular was far too graphic and detailed for me. While others might not be bothered by it, I seriously had to put the book down for a few days before I could stomach reading further.<br />
<br />
The sex scenes in the story between Caine/David and his lady were no more than a booty call. There was nothing loving or tender about it. This is one area that bothered me as well. Caine/David and this lady had a long history of these booty calls. She had feelings for him, but he denied his feelings for her up until the very end of the book. There was no developing of a true relationship between them. Their relationship screamed of the "friends with benefits" status and never went further, even though at the end the author tried to make it all sweet and nice.<br />
<br />
I have not been familiar enough with Ms Walker's books, so have no idea if this book is typical of her writing style. Unfortunately for me, this book hasn't left me feeling inspired to seek out more of her books. Others who are not bothered by the graphic violence may enjoy the book. It just wasn't something that I enjoyed nor could recommend.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14370369815023572304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789187523719466984.post-44361644538579228192015-01-28T20:36:00.003-08:002015-01-28T20:36:39.603-08:00Back in RoutineWhat a crazy few weeks it has been! Started off with my hubby taking a fall and breaking his shoulder blade. Yikes! Lot's of shuttling him and the kids around has caused me to fall behind in my blog posts. But, I am back to reading again and will be posting a review very soon.<br />
<br />
The reading bug has caught up to our daughter. Her only request for her upcoming 9th birthday is a Kindle. So, looks like a new generation of avid readers is on the horizon. She absolutely devours books. <br />
<br />
One thing that I love about reviewing is that I am trying out new-to-me authors. I am definitely a creature of habit. Typically, I will find a few authors whose work I love. I then buy and read everything they publish. One librarian once told me that I am a difficult person to recommend books to. I definitely have a set idea of what I like. Doing the reviews, I am finding that there are a lot of authors out there who write books that I thoroughly enjoy.<br />
<br />
Something that has been mentioned to me is the lack of negative reviews on my blog. There is a reason for that. If I really don't like a book, I will send the review directly to the publisher through a review site. I have often read bad reviews for books that I totally loved. I have also had the experience of reading a review of an author I was unfamiliar with, then not purchasing the book based upon that review. I would not want to have someone possibly not purchase a book based upon something that I wrote. What I will be doing in the future however is make a suggestion for books I haven't liked. If in doubt on whether you would like a book, rent it from the library first, Then, if you like it, buy the book to add to your home library or eReader. <br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Below the Belt is the 3rd book in Sidney Halston's Worth the Fight series. It is the story of Antonio "Scarface" Marino and Francesca Silva. On Amazon, there is the following book description.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; font-style: italic;">Once one of the most sought-after names on the mixed martial arts circuit, Antonio “Scarface” Marino watched his career go down for the count as he chased skirts and made tabloid headlines. Now he’s finally making a comeback, and it’s all thanks to Francesca Silva, a Brazilian bombshell as tough as any of her fighters. But who’s the real Francesca: the trash-talking trainer who rides him hard, or the vulnerable woman who blushes at his touch?</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-style: italic;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; font-style: italic;"> </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-style: italic;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; font-style: italic;">Francesca went to the mat to sign Tony because she believes he still has the potential to bring big success to her gym—if she can keep his head in the cage and out of her personal life. After a short-lived marriage soured her on love, a one-night stand is all she can handle. Now Tony’s kisses are stirring up complicated feelings—especially when he agrees to face her ex in the ring. Francesca’s used to freezing guys out. But Tony’s tempting her to give in to the heat.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I read this story after having first read the book, Full Contact. It was a new series to me and I wanted to give it a try. Now, just a word of caution. If you are easily embarrassed by stories that are very carnal in nature, you need to know that your comfort zone may be stretched in this series. Unlike Full Contact, which was highly sexual in nature, this story focuses even more on the relationship outside of the intimacies.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I loved getting to know the characters better. We learn about them in Full Contact and are able to see the beginnings of the dynamics between Antonio and Francesca. In this book, their story is one of overcoming the obstacles that we often place upon ourselves. Each had struggles within their own hearts to overcome. Francesca had to face the past and her failed first marriage. We learn just how deeply that experience had affected her outlook on life. Antonio, on the other hand, had to face the demons of his own heart. He had to come to terms with his choices in his MMA career and face the fact that he had some decisions to make about his future with MMA.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Together, these two characters are an entertaining mix. The sarcasm and snarky wordplay between them was fun. Each being determined in their own mindset. One wanting to have a relationship and the other running from it. After reading so many stories where the man is the reluctant party, it was refreshing to read a story where the man has to really chase after the woman. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This couple has you guessing all the way through to the end. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Abby Thompson didn't sign up to be the daughter of the President of the United States. The position was forced on her by the small matter of her </span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.15; white-space: pre-wrap;">birth. Preferring a quiet life of study, she's content to leave the politics and the international intrigue to her father. Unfortunately, the most powerful man on the planet is sure to make enemies. When a group of armed thugs takes her hostage half a world away, demanding the U.S. government release prisoners in exchange for her safe return, she fears her father's policy of "not negotiating with terrorists" means she'll never see the shores of the Potomac again. Luckily, there's one glimmer of hope. His name is Carlos Soto. And though she abruptly ended things with him years ago, she knows now he's the only man who can save her…</span></div>

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Carlos "Steady" Soto has taken part in his fair share of dangerous missions working at the covert government defense firm of Black Knights Inc. But nothing prepared him for the emotional rollercoaster he faces when he's tasked with rescuing the only woman he ever loved-who also broke his heart. Racing against time and outmaneuvering a group of trained terrorists will take everything he's got. Plus there's the heat simmering between them which is threatening to ignite into an inferno. While ruthless enemies stalk them, they must learn to trust each other again. Even if they do make it out alive, will Abby turn her back on him... for the second time?</span></div>

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The hum of the Ducati was reassuring, as was Abby’s tightened grip around Steady’s waist. They were riding down the devil’s own washed--out, rutted, rock--filled hell of a rubber tree logging road, and for the first ten minutes of the harrowing journey, while she’d still been suffering the lingering effects of the sedative, it was just as difficult to keep her on the bike as it was to navigate the frackin’ jungle track.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">But now they were clipping along at a steady, if decidedly slow, pace. No JI goons could be seen in his rearview mirrors—-though it was hard to tell exactly, given the fact that the forest encroached from both sides and above. And if his calculations were correct, a half hour or so more should see them entering the lovely kingdom of Thailand.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Abby squirmed against his back, interrupting his thoughts and alerting him to the feel of her supple thighs pressed against the outsides of his hips and legs. Which, in turn, immediately focused his attention on her soft breasts—-and distended nipples?—-grazing his back.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">

Even while worming his way through the dense undergrowth of ferns and vines after escaping the encampment and hiking back to the Ducati, he’d been hard--pressed to concentrate on anything other than the feel of Abby squeezed all nice and tight against him. Abby’s soft skin touching his. Abby’s sweet smell—-even sweaty and bedraggled, she still emanated a soft cloud of dryer sheets and cocoa butter lotion—-filling his nose and making his head spin.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I love second chance type stories and this one delivered. This story is about Lorenzo di Grechi and his ex-wife, Ashlynne. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ashlynne is traveling, on her way back home to spend the holidays with her parents in England when the weather causes a delay in Venice, Italy. Stranded at the airport, Ashlynne is surprised to see Lorenzo also at the airport. He invites her to spend the layover with him instead of being stranded at the airport until it reopens. This is where the story begins to get really good for me.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Lorenzo and Ashlynne find quite quickly that the chemistry between them hasn't grown cold. The problem is, Ashlynne is not ready to let go of the past. Their divorce was brought on by a tragic event in their lives and she has never set it all to rest. Enter into the mix is the past scheming of Lorenzo's former personal assistant and you have a toxic mix.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Claire, who was working as Lorenzo's personal assistant at the time of the divorce, was an instrumental part of the break-up. She came to Ashlynne in a time of personal tragedy and set about to bring doubts into Ashlynne's mind of Lorenzo's commitment to the marriage. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The divorce and it's aftermath brought on a moment of epiphany for Lorenzo. He was a workaholic to the extreme and was faced with his obsessions with work being a large part of his marriage failing. Finding Ashlynne at the airport is a gift to Lorenzo. He now has the chance to make things right between them again.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But, can Lorenzo convince Ashlynne that he has changed? Or will the ghosts of the past threaten to destroy any chance for a reconciliation between them?</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I loved this story. The characters have a depth that held my interest. I loved the humor and tender moments of the relationship between Lorenzo and Ashlynne just as much as the snarky side. The struggle that each goes through as they try to make peace with each other is painful to read due to the raw feelings they experience. Yet, it is also a time of wanting to cheer them on as they gently make their way through the emotional mine field to find each other.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
The book is relatively short which makes it a great read is you are wanting something that is light fare. Christmas in Venice is book number 4 in the Christmas Around the World series.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Typically, I have always been leery of reading anthology books that are based in the same location and time period. This book was a pleasant surprise.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Cowboys for Christmas is a compilation of 3 separate stories. Three friends, Claire, Georgia, and Mary Catherine, have come together for Mary Catherine's wedding. Each of these women will be faced with choices that are life altering. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Claire has always felt love for Mary Catherine's brother, Tyler. When they were teenagers, they had a drunken one night stand. Each remembered the event but never faced it in the light of day. Claire was over weight at that time and couldn't believe that Tyler would want to sleep with her except that he had taken part in a bet with his friends. Tyler, always was attracted to Claire. Her weight was never an issue. When she left him after their time together, he never understood why she had gone. Now, she is back in Holly Hills, Texas, and he is not about to let her get away again. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Georgia is a volleyball coach at an ivy league school. She left Holly Hills after to get away from her horrible childhood. Growing up in poverty, she set goals for herself that did not include ever returning to Holly Hills. Taking part in her friend's wedding, Georgia makes the journey back to Holly Hills and meets the local veterinarian. The fireworks between these two start firing off right away. Can this small town vet convince Georgia that she can find a new life in Holly Hills, despite the past?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Mary Catherine is getting married to a man she went to school with. At a time when she should be glowing with happiness, Mary Catherine is miserable. Her overbearing stepmom has taken over her wedding, turning it into a 3-ring circus that she hates. Her stepmom has her convinced however that this spectacle is exactly what a young woman of her breeding should do, especially when marrying a young doctor. As Mary Catherine slowly sees pieces of her life being chipped away from her by the expectations of her fiance and stepmom, Mary Catherine is falling apart. What makes things worse is that she has never gotten over her first love who owns on the ranch next door. As her wedding day draws near, she has to face the decision of whether to marry her fiance as planned, or take a chance on recapturing the past with her first love.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The three stories, while each could hold it's own separately, blend well together. There is just enough overlap to tie them together yet enough original material in each to make the stories interesting. One story in the set, Georgia's story, was a harder read for me. While it followed the timeline of the stories really well, the writing was hard to stay with. I found myself skipping ahead a few times to get through it. Over all though, the stories worked together and I found myself enjoying the book for the most part.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
This was a book that kept me laughing. Former Navy SEAL, Dan Hemmins, goes to a friend's home for the Christmas holiday only to meet his match. Typical of many Navy SEAL stories, he is a very alpha male type character with an ego that is off the charts. He is competitive by nature and is a bit sexist in his opinions about women. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Another guest at the holiday celebrations is Army soldier, Sarah Metlin. Sarah is nearing the end of her time in the Army and is trying to decide whether or not to sign up for another tour or go ahead and get discharged. She is a very frustrated soldier. Sarah comes from a military family of males who are condescending over her not being more than a regular soldier. It frustrates her to no end that because she is a woman, she cannot train to become a SEAL. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When Dan and Sarah meet, it is instant chemistry. The snarky comments abound as they diss each other's choice of military branch and service. Underneath the jokes however is the beginnings of attraction.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Dan is planning to start a training program for civilians who want to experience the training SEALs go through. Looking for investors and others to help launch the program, Dan completely overlooks the option of inviting Sarah to consider taking part. Besides, what would a female have to offer such an endeavor, right? Dan quickly finds out that Sarah can more than keep up with him.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Having his competitive side sparked by Sarah, Dan begins challenging her to a series of exercises. Each one ends up with bets being made. Dan learns fast that Sarah is not the dainty little lady he sees, but is a well trained soldier who can hold her own. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I loved the competitive side to each of the characters. Dan had to learn to accept that woman can be just as well trained as a man. Sarah had to learn to accept that she will never be a SEAL, but can offer much just being who she is.....a top notch soldier.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are ups and downs in their budding relationship. Each has to work through their own emotional baggage. The worst being Sarah's feelings of being held back and put down by the men in her life. She comes to terms with it and finds out that she can command respect without the job title of being a SEAL. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Throughout the book, there is much humor. As the bets become more outlandish, the hilarity ensues. At times, you wonder what a character is thinking when they act or say something totally boneheaded, but then you next cheering them on as they finally get things right.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Overall, the book is one that I thoroughly loved. It makes for a fun read that has me now looking for more titles by Cora Seton to add to my reading list.</div>
